Anifile - Madoka Magica

To round off the Winter 2011 lineup, Masako has the review that so many of you have requested for. So here are his first impressions on the magical girl show which turns the very concept on its head! It's Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

  1. Well, I must say ... this was a great review throughout.

From start to finish, I found myself enjoying the jokes, the summary was tight and quick paced, and Masako managed to hit all the important points (though I disagree on the minor nitpick he raised here). This was the best Anifile thus far. Great work.

    ''Game changer''
Not really? I mean, is it any more of a game changer than Utena, Princess Tutu or HeartCatch PreCure? I personally don't think so. It's has a slightly darker tone than other magical girl shows, and it's certainly well written for the most part, but that doesn't make it a game changer. A breath of fresh air for sure, but it's really just another show that proves that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover and simply write off a show just because it's a magical girl anime.

There should be more focus on who is creating the anime rather than what the anime appears to be imo.

  2. I'm just surprised we didn't get a Hideaki Anno joke...I mean, this is the Evangelion of Magical Girl animes, right?

  4. Ever since I found out you were gonna be doing a Madoka Magica episode, I've been wholeheartedly looking forward to it, and, as always, fantastic. Sadly, due to my own laziness, I haven't watched past episode 6 yet, even though I've had plenty of time, but this is still definitely a great series. Shame the last two episodes won't be on till sometime in April.

As I said, I've only seen the first 6 episodes so far, so it's possible it's from a later episode, but what was that song you played during the title card? I'm so used to you playing the anime of the week's opening theme during the title card and ending theme during the credits, but that wasn't the opening theme, and I don't recall having heard it at all in the first 6 episodes.

@ClariNerd617: Not quite Eva. I've had friends that describe it more as the Magical Girl version of Bokurano.

  5. @Conan_Edogawa: My guess is because it's not a song that belongs to Madoka Magica at all :P It's actually the opening theme for Rental Magica. I have no idea why MasakoX chose to play this song here, as it's really strange.

Saying Madoka is similar to Bokurano is more accurate (and since the show makes constant references to that show) but I personally would say it's more akin to Higurashi than anything else. Just better written.
